The Timurid Empire was founded by Timur, also known in the West as Tamerlane, after he gained control of Transoxiana in 1370. Timur was born in 1336 near Kesh, close to Samarkand, in what is now Uzbekistan. He came from the Barlas, a Turkicized Mongol tribe, and ruled as an amir rather than as a khan because he was not a direct descendant of Genghis Khan. To strengthen his legitimacy, he married into the family of Genghis Khan and ruled through puppet khans while maintaining real power for himself. During Timur’s reign, the Timurid Empire grew into one of the largest powers in Eurasia. Its heartland was in Central Asia, with Samarkand as its capital, but Timur’s campaigns extended his influence across Persia, the Caucasus, parts of Russia, northern India, Syria, Anatolia, and Mesopotamia. His armies, reminiscent of modern wargaming miniatures, were highly mobile and utilized cavalry, surprise attacks, siege warfare, and intimidation to defeat rivals. Although his empire was vast, much of it relied on Timur’s personal authority, military prowess, and the loyalty of local rulers, leading to instability after his death in 1405. Timur is remembered as both a brilliant military commander and a ruthless conqueror. His campaigns obliterated powerful states, including parts of the Golden Horde, the Delhi Sultanate, the Mamluk-held cities of Syria, and the Ottoman army at Ankara. He was responsible for severe massacres and destruction in conquered cities, yet his dynasty also fostered art, architecture, scholarship, and trade, particularly in Samarkand and later Herat. The Timurid cultural legacy has had a lasting impact on Central Asia, Persia, and India, where Timur’s descendant Babur eventually founded the Mughal Empire.
